What is Alcohol Detox and when is it necessary?

There is an enormous amount of information on this subject some of which is useful and some of which is false. In this article I am going to look and analyse what is helpful and what is not.

The first point I would like to make is that there are different degrees of alcohol excess and therefore there different methods employed for alcohol detox.

How do we define Alcohol Detox?

Alcohol  detox is the abrupt cessation of alcohol intake in individuals that are dependent on alcohol to a certain degree. This process involves the use of drugs that have effects on the body to alcohol in order to prevent alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Stages of alcoholism

  • Occasional abuse and binge drinking

binge drinking is defined as:

  • for men, five for men or four for women or more alcoholic beverages within two hours
  • Increased drinking

Increased alcohol consumption can also lead to drinking for these reasons:

  • as an excuse to get together with friends
  • to alleviate stress
  • out of boredom
  • to combat sadness or loneliness

Problem drinking

  • relationship issues
  • decreased social activity because of erratic behaviour
  • sudden change in friends
  • difficulty conversing with strangers
  • Alcohol dependence

This means that you have developed a tolerance to drinking. As a result, you need to drink larger quantities to get high or drunk. This stage requires a more serious approach to detox as the withdrawal symptoms are:

  • nausea that is unrelated to a hangover
  • body tremors
  • sweating
  • severe irritability
  • a racing heart
  • insomnia

Alcoholism Addiction

This is the final stage of alcoholism. At this stage, you no longer want to drink just for pleasure. Alcohol addiction is characterised by a physical and psychological need to drink they are often inconsolable until they start drinking again.

How to do alcohol Detox

There are a number of ways to effectuate an alcohol detox but most of them are floored. This is because people manage to stop drinking for a while but more often or not return to it.
